From Balcony to Playground Oasis: Growing a Garden During and After COVID

When my son was five, the world slowed down during the COVID pandemic. In our seventh-floor apartment in Arlington, VA, life became smaller and quieter. Like many others, I found myself searching for ways to create joy and purpose during uncertain times. That’s when the idea struck me: we could start a garden right on our balcony. What began as a simple activity to keep my son engaged turned into a passion project that is now transforming the playground my cousins and I grew up on into a flourishing vegetable and flower garden.

The Balcony Beginnings

Back then, our garden was limited to a small balcony space. My son and I worked together, planting herbs, a few flowers, and even some cherry tomatoes in pots and containers. He loved digging in the soil and watching the tiny seeds sprout into something real and alive. For both of us, it was more than just gardening—it was therapy, connection, and a reminder of growth even during the hardest times.

Dreaming Big: From a Balcony to the Playground

Fast forward a few years, and I decided to bring this gardening spirit to a much larger space: the playground where my first cousins and I spent our childhoods. The transition is exciting but daunting. I have begun by sketching diagrams and plans. Where should the vegetables go? How much sunlight does this area get? Which flowers will thrive here? Each decision feels significant, and I love bringing my vision to life.

Choosing What to Plant

Planning the has become an obsession. I want it to be both practical and beautiful. I decided on a mix of vegetables, herbs, and flowers to ensure a balance of function and aesthetics. Some of our staples include tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, marigolds, and zinnias. Each plant has a purpose—whether it’s to feed us, attract pollinators, or simply brighten the space with vibrant colors.

Managing Watering Challenges

Watering a garden this size was a new challenge. I quickly realized that relying solely on the house’s water supply could lead to an astronomical water bill. So, I started researching ways to be more sustainable. A rainwater catchment system became my solution. It’s simple yet effective, collecting and storing rainwater to supplement the plants’ needs.

Looking ahead, I’ve started brainstorming ways to incorporate the nearby pond water into the system. The pond sits downhill from the garden, so figuring out how to pump water uphill is a puzzle I’m determined to solve. For now, the rain catchment system is a step in the right direction toward sustainability.

Reflecting on the Journey

Thinking back to those early days on the balcony, I’m amazed at how far we’ve come. The garden is no longer just a source of fresh produce and beautiful blooms. It’s a testament to resilience, creativity, and the ability to grow—even when life feels constrained.

From nurturing small pots on a high-rise balcony to transforming a beloved childhood playground into a thriving oasis, this journey has been a labor of love. And while there’s always more work to be done, I’m grateful for every step along the way.
